Torrey Door and Window Company often installs new windows directly in place of old windows. While the process might seem straightforward enough, there are actually some important concerns to address in retrofitting windows.
In general, it is important to work with a few common sense concepts. First, be sure to thoroughly inspect the old window. Windows and surrounding walls are more than wooden frames. It is vital to ensure preventative measures have been taking to avoid water penetration. Otherwise, you risk deterioration of the wall construction and its respective components. Additionally, when installing the window you need to be sure to: avoid over-tightening screws, thoroughly prepare the area by removing any pre-existing sash components and most important of all, take accurate measurements.
Measurements must be taken to determine daylight opening sizes and to ensure squareness. This will facilitate a long-lasting installation by preventing damage, deterioration and decay. To determine the daylight opening size, three measurements must be taken horizontally between the pre-existing jambs at the corners and at the center. You'll want to record the smallest dimension. Further, you'll need to take three measurements vertically from the pre-existing head to the pre-existing sill at the corners and at the center. Like before, you'll make note of the smallest dimension. Finally, determine squareness of the opening by cross-measuring the opening. In the end, the retrofit window should be approximately 6 mm (1/4 in) less in with and height than the measurements you have taken. Conditions which are out of square may require additional allowances.
As with any home improvement job, it's always best to consult with a professional before doing anything outside your comfort zone. It's the best way to get the job done properly and to save you money in the long run. We at Torrey Door and Window Company are always available and happy to help. Don't hesitate to contact us.
