Should I Use Pre-Hung Doors or Slabs?

Door being installedAfter you have decided to replace a door you will need to determine the best way to go about it. A pre hung door is one with the hinges and jamb already assembled. A slab or book door is just the door itself without any preparation done for hinges or locks. A slab door is much more difficult to install if you are not experienced, but if you are you can save a whole lot of time and exspense using this method.

It is appropriate to install a pre hung doors if:

  1. The existing jamb is in poor condition. (out of square or full of termites)
  2. You are also planning on replacing the door casing.
  3. You do not have the tools or the skill requiered to prepare a slab door.

A slab door should be used if.

  1. The existing jamb is in good condition.
  2. You do not want the extra work of painting a new jamb or patching drywall and stucco that is often necessary when installing a pre hung door.
  3. You have the tools and skill required to install a slab door.
